The Rank of the Ahlul Bayt

From Ahmed Al-Hassan Wiki

The Household of Propet Muhammed - the Ahlul Bayt - are the most beloved creation of Allah (swt).
They have such closeness to God, that it boggles the mind, and takes ones breath each time we attempt to realize their station.

When we come to know about Ahlul Bayt in the Holy Quran and the traditions, we will see that titles such as – ‘People of the Reminder’, ‘The Truthful’, ‘The Benefactors’, ‘The Pious’, ‘The Strivers’, ‘The Believers’, ‘The Patient’, ‘People of Understanding’, ‘The Straight Path (sirat)’, ‘The Way (sabil) to Allah’, ‘The Revenge of Allah’, ‘The Face of Allah’, ‘The Eye of Allah’, ‘The Side of Allah’, ‘The Ear of Allah’, ‘The Spokesmen of Allah’, ‘The Friends of Allah’ - all refer to the holy five: Muhammed, Ali, Fatima, Hassan, and Hussain (peace be upon them all).

By getting to know the Ahlul Bayt (as) on the basis of the Quranic verses and narrations the veils of ignorance shall be removed from our eyes...

Ahlul Bayt, who are the oceans of knowledge and endowed with all virtues, had been created by Allah to reflect Him (swt) for us in creation so that we may come closer to knowing Him.

They never tire to warn us from the "I", and to open the gate of paradise for us, and to shut the gate of perdition - in this world and the hereafter.

Without knowing and following them man is deprived of all blessings...

Who are Ahlul Bayt?

All Muslims weather Sunni or Shia know that the "Verse of Purification" from the Holy Quran which is supposed to talk about Ahlul Bayt (as)...
{Indeed Allah desires to repel all impurity (rijis) from you, O People of the Household, and purify you with a thorough purification.} - Surah Al-Aḥzāb, Verse 33

In regards to this verse we should read the following narration:
After al-Husayn (a.s.) Imamat (Leadership with Divine Authority) found its place with Ali ibn al-Husayn (as). After Ali ibn al-Husayn (as) it found its place with Muhammad ibn Ali (as)." The Imam (as) said, "Al-Rijs means doubts, I swear by Allah that we never doubt in our Lord." - Part of a long narration found in Al-Kafi, H 757, Ch. 64, h 1

And also all Muslims know the "Hadith of the Two Weighty Things":
The Prophet (sawas) said, ‘Verily I leave behind among you the two weighty things, which as long as you continue to adhere to, you will never go astray after me, and one of which is greater than the other. The Book of Allah is the rope stretched from the heavens to the earth, and my progeny, my household. Behold, verily they will never separate from each other until they meet me at the Heavenly Waters.’ [Bihar al-Anwar, v. 23, p. 106, no. 7]

But not every Muslims knows the full version of the "The Tradition of the Cloak", or "Hadith al-Kisa" which clearly defines for us who Ahlul Bayt or the Houshold of Prophet Muhammed are.
It is a narrative of an incident where the Prophet Muhammad assembled Hassan, Husayn, Ali, and Fatima under his cloak, saying "This is my Ahlul Bayt".

Upon that Archangel Gabriel constitutes the sublime divine spiritual leadership of Ahlul Kisa over creation by saying to them "The High Almighty sends you His salam, and He prefers you with special greetings. And He says to you, 'By My Might and by My Glory, I have not created any high sky or any flat earth or any shining moon or any bright sun or any constellation moving or any sea flowing or any ships moving, except for you and in your love.

Knowing Ahlul Bayt means Knowing the Way to Paradise

Hell-735995 1920.jpg

Surely getting to know the Ahlul Bayt leads to getting to know Allah, and their example leads to self-purification.
They help us to become immune from vices, they teach us to resist temptations, to gain virtue and happiness in this world and the hereafter, and hence experience closeness to Him (swt).

  • And he Holy Prophet (swas) said:"Getting to know the family of Muhammad (sawas) is means for being saved from the fire. Love for the family of Muhammad (sawas) will ease crossing the sirat as well as, give immunity from chastisement."
  • Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Daylami from his father from Aban ibn Taghlib who has said the following: "I said to abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.), "May Allah take my soul in service for your cause, what is the meaning of the words of Allah, "Yet, he has not entered into aqaba." (90:11) The Imam (a.s.) said, "To whoever Allah has granted honor through our Wilaya (Leadership with Divine Authority) he has crossed the aqaba (the stage). We are the aqaba. Whoever would reach us gains his salvation." The narrator has said that he remained quite for a while and then said to me, "Would to learn a letter from that would be better for you than the whole world and all that is therein?" I said, "yes, May Allah take my soul in service for your cause." He then said, "It is the setting free of a slave." Then he said, "All people are slaves of fire. except you and your people. Allah has set you free from fire through our (Ahl al Bayt) Wilaya' (Leadership and Guardianship with Divine Authority)." - Al Kafi Volume 1, Part 4, The Book about People with Divine Authority -Chapter 108, hadith 85

Now, if we wish to win Allah's favor, we must follow Ahlul Bayt wholeheartedly, and purify ourselves.

Loving and Following Ahlul Bayt

The Holy Prophet Muhammed (sawas) says in the Holy Quran:
{Love for my relatives) brings about happiness in this world and the hereafter, while to neglect them causes perdition} 42:23

And he says:
{Say, if you love Allah, then follow me, Allah will love you.} (3:31)

  • Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Umar al-Zayyat informed us that ‘Ali ibn Ismail reported to him from Muhammad ibn Khalaf, who reported from al-Husayn al-Ashqar, who reported from Qais, from Laith ibn Abi Sulaim, from Abdul Rahman ibn Abi Laila, reporting from Al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali, peace be upon him, that the Prophet, peace be upon him and his progeny, said: "Remain steadfast on our love, the Ahlul Bayt. For he who meets Allah with our love, will enter the Paradise with our intercession. By He Who controls my soul, a servant (of Allah) does not benefit from his deeds except by knowing us (and our stature)." - Al-Amali, The Dictations of Shaykh al-Mufid, p.14
  • Al-Sharif Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Hamza reported to me from Ahmad ibn Abdullah, from his grandfather Ahmad ibn Abdullah, who reported from his father, who reported from Dawood ibn alNu’man, from Amru ibn Abu al-Miqdam, from his father who reported that al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali (as) said: "He who loves us with his heart, and helps us with his hands and tongue, will be with us (in Paradise) at the same lodging. And he who loves us with his heart and helps us with his tongue will be at a lower level. And he who loves us with his heart, but does not put his hand and tongue to use for us, he will be in Paradise." - Al-Amali, The Dictations of Shaykh al-Mufid, p.26
  • The Prophet (sawas) said, 'My intercession will avail those people from my community who love my household.’[Kanz al-`Ummal, no. 39057]
  • The Prophet (sawas) said, ‘On the Day of Resurrection, the feet of the servant will not slip until he is asked about four things: his years and how he spent them, his youth and how he wasted it, his wealth, whence he earned it and how he spent it, and our love, the people of the household (ahl al-bayt).’ [alKhisal, p. 253, no. 125]
  • The Prophet (sawas) said, ‘The first thing that man will be asked about is our love, the people of the Household (ahl al-bayt).’[`Uyoun Akhbar al-Ridha (AS), v.2, p. 62, no. 258]
  • Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Verily above every act of worship is an even better act of worship, and love for us, the household of the Prophet, is the best act of worship.’[al-Mahasin, v. 1, p. 247, no. 462]
  • The Prophet (sawas) said, ‘Man is not considered a believer until I am dearer to him than his own self, my household dearer to him than his own household, my family dearer to him than his own family, and my being dearer to him than his own being.’ [`Ilal al-Shara’i`, p. 140, no. 3]

Holding fast to the Household of Muhammed

Rock-climbing-1283693 1920.jpg
  • The Prophet (sawas) said, ‘Those of you who will have the firmest footing on the Bridge are those who have the strongest love for my household.’[Faza’il alShi`aa, p. 48, no. 3]
  • Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, regarding the verse of Allah, most High: “He has held fast to the firmest handle” [Qur’an 2:256], said, ‘It is love for us, the Prophet’s household (ahl al-bayt).’[Nur al-Thaqalayn, v. 1, p. 263, no. 1054]
  • The Holy Prophet [p.b.u.h.] said: "The likeness of my Ahlul-Bayt (progeny) amongst my Ummah (followers) is similar to Noah's Ark. Those who embarked on it were rescued and those who rejected it perished...." [Bihar-ul-Anwar, vol. 27, p. 113]
  • "O Ali, I am the city of knowledge and you are the gate thereof. The city cannot be entered except through its gate.
The one who is thinking he loves me but has enmity towards you is false in loving me, for you are of me and I am of you. Your flesh is my flesh, your blood is my blood, your spirit is my spirit, your inward is my inward, and your outward is my outward.
You are the leader of my ummah (community), you are the caliph after me.)
Whoever loves you, will gain; whoever is your enemy, will suffer losses; whoever accompanies you, will find salvation; whoever is separated from you, will go to ruin.
The parable of you and the Imams following you is the parable of Noah’s Ark. Whoever enters it, will find salvation and whoever disobeys will drown. The parable of Ahl al-Bayt is the parable of stars. Whenever a star disappears, another star will appear until the Judgment Day."
  • Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Look at the people of the Prophet’s household. Adhere to their direction, follow their footsteps, because they will never remove you from guidance, and will never throw you into destruction. If they sit down [i.e. desist from revolting], you sit down, and if they rise up, you rise up.’ [Sharhe Nahj alBalagha li Ibn Abi al-Hadid, v. 7, p. 76]
  • Allah (swt) says: {And hold fast by the covenant of Allah all together and be not disunited.} (3:13)
And Imam al-Baqir (a.s) has said about the meaning of this covenant with Allah: "The Household of Muhammad is the covenant of Allah as recommended by Allah."

The Obligation to Know and Submit to Ahlul Bayt

  • Yunus has narrated from Dawud ibn Farqad from Hassan al-Jammal from ‘Amirah who has said the following: “I heard abu ‘Abd Allah, (recipient of divine supreme covenant), saying, People are commanded to know us (Ahl al-Bayt), and they are referred to us and to submit to us.’ The Imam then said, ‘If they fast, perform prayers, testify that there is no one who deserves to be worshipped except Allah but keep it in themselves and do not refer to us for guidance, for this they will be considered Mushrik, (considering things as partners of Allah).’” [Al Kafi, Volume 2, Hadith 2862, Chapter 164]
  • Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad from al-Washsha’ from Aban from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “About the words of Allah, the Most Holy, the Most High, ‘Whoever achieves virtue We will increase for him its merit....’ (42:23) abu Ja‘far, (recipient of divine supreme covenant), has said, ‘Achievement refers to one’s submission to us, his speaking the truth from us and not to ascribe any lies to us.’” - Al Kafi Volume 1, Part Four, Chapter 95, hadith 4

Only a Strong Believer will be Able to Recognize their True Status

Sky-3335585 1920.jpg
  • Imam Ali (as) said: "O’Salman (a.s)! If one dies from amongst Us, He is not dead, and if someone is slain from amongst Us, He is not slain. One from amongst Us who is in occultation performs His duties as We do [while apparently present].
We are not born in this world the way humans are born in this world. You cannot compare Us with mankind.

I was the voice of Isa (as) when He spoke from the cradle. I am the helper of Nuh (as) and Ibrahim (as). I am the one who will send the wrath of Allah. I shall also bring about the trembling and shall cause the final quake. I am the Lohay Mahfooz (Protected Tablet) and all of the knowledge within it originates from Me. I can appear in any form by the wish of Allah. Whoever has observed these appearances has seen Me and whoever has seen Me has observed the Signs of Allah.
We Masoomeen (as) are the Noor of Allah which can never be rejected or changed. O’Salman (as)! Every prophet is honored because of Us.
You can praise Us with whatever titles or attributes within your imagination however do not ascribe rabuyiat (godship) to Us. People find salvation through Us and reach their destruction due to Us.
O’Salman (as)! He who firmly believes in all that I have explained is that Momin (strong believer) whose heart has been tested by Allah with iman (true faith) and he has recognized Our true status. One who doubts or hesitates is a Nasibi (hater of Ahlul Bayt) even if he claims to believe in Our wilayat (guardianship) he is a liar. O’Salman (a.s)!
Myself and the Divine Guides from My Family , Imams (as), are the hidden mystery of Allah and Most Beloved by Him. We are all One. Our Amr (authority) is One. Our mystery is One. Thus do not try to find differences amongst Us or you will be killed (go astray).
We shall appear in every age by the will of Allah. Afflictions shall be upon the one who denies us. Only those whose hearts, eyes, and ears have been sealed will deny us."- From the Sermon Khutbat al Ma'rifat al Nooraniya
  • And from Ameer Al-Mu'mineen (as) in the famous hadith of their knowledge of Nooraniya: "Oh Aba Thar, I am the slave of Allah [Glorified and Sublime be He] and His khalifa over His slaves. Do not make us lords and say in our merit whatever (else) you want because you will not reach the extent of what is in us or the end. Because Allah [Glorified and Sublime be He] gave us bigger and greater than what you can describe or chance upon any of your hearts. So if you know us like this then you are the believers." - Bihar Al-Anwar 2/26

Some of the awe-inspiring Qualities of Ahlul Bayt

Here is just one example of the awe-inspiring qualities of Ahlul Bayt (as)...

Imam al-Sadiq (AS), mentioning the status and qualities of the Imams said, ‘Allah has made them the [source of] life for mankind, the lamps in the darkness, the keys to expression and the pillars of Islam.’ - al-Kafi, v. 1, p. 204, no. 2

And there are many more...

Worship is only accepted through recognizing Ahlul Bayt

  • Addressing Mu’alla ibn Khunays, Imam al-Sadiq (as) said: O Mu’alla, if a servant of Allah worships Him between the Rukn (corner) and Maqam (standing-place) of Kabah for a hundred years, keeping fast on all days and performing prayers on all nights so much so that his life comes to an end, but is negligent about our rights, there will be no reward for him."
  • Imam al-Sadiq (AS), with regards to Allah’s verse: “You will surely be asked on that day concerning the blessing”, said, ‘This community will be asked about the bounty that Allah bestowed on them in the form of the Messenger of Allah (sawas), and then his household (AS).’ [Bihar al-Anwar, v. 7, p. 272, no. 39]
  • Imām Jafar Al Ṣādiq (pbuh) said: “Indeed, Allah created us and formed us, and gave us the most perfect form. He made us His Eye over His Servants, and His Speaking Tongue, through which He speaks to His Servants. We are His Open Hand, extended with Mercy and Kindness to His Servants. We are His Face, through which He is reached, and the Gate which indicates upon Him. We are His reservoir in the Heavens and Earth. Through us, the trees grow and the fruits are ripened. Through us the rivers flow, and through us the succor of the skies comes down. We plant the grasses of the earth. Through our worship, Allah is worshipped. If it were not for us, Allah would not be worshipped.” (Al-Kulayni, Usūl Al-Kāfi, 1:144)

If not for Ahlul Bayt creation would not exist

  • Narrated from Imam Ali (as) that Prophet Mohammad (saww) said, "If we were not there then the heaven and the hell and the Messengers and angels would not have been created." - Kifayat al-Asar Fee Nass ala Aaimmah Ithna Ashar, Pg. 158
  • Prophet Mohammad (saww) in a long narration when talking about Mera'aj says the following about what Allah (swt) told the Prophet (saww): Allah (swt) said to the Prophet (saww), "If you were not there then I would not have created Adam (as) and if Ali (as) was not there then I would not have created the heaven." - Source: Al-Yaqeen - Sayed ibn Taoos, Pg. 426
  • Prophet Mohammad (saww) said to Imam Ali (as), "O' Ali (as), If We were not there, then Allah (swt) would not have created Adam (as) and Hawa (sa) and the heaven and the hell and the sky and the earth." - Source: Elal al-Sharae - Shaikh Sadooq, Vol. 1, Pg. 5
  • Aba Sadiq (as) said: For if it wasn’t for Muhammad and his Family (as), we would not even exist right now and nothing would exist right now except for them, so damned and cursed be he who favors his own life and belongings above Ale Muhammad (as). - Paltalk Speech 25.02.2016 "Advice to the Ansar"

Summary: Ahlul Bayt - The Most Humble Creation

Despite all their merits Ahlul Bayt consider themselves the poor servants of God, and servants of humanity.

Imam Ahmed Al-Hassan said:
"We have not arrived except to serve the children of Adam (as)." - Q&A from 23.01.2017 with Aba Sadiq (as) on Paltalk''

And he said:
"And I, and I seek refuge in Allah from the “I”, the poor needy servant who is between the hands of his Lord" - Sermon to the Students of the Academic Howza

And he said:
"And I, and I seek refuge in Allah from the “I”, will not pray that the torment hastens and is sent down upon you, even though I see that it has shadowed you. And I will be patient for a thousand years if Allah wished, until Allah accomplishes a matter that was already destined." - Sermon to the Students of the Academic Howza

Imam Zainal Abideen said:
"My Allah, as Thou hast fed us through Thy gentleness and nurtured us through Thy benefaction, so also complete for us lavish favours, repel from us detested acts of vengeance, and of the shares of the two abodes, give us their most elevated and their greatest, both the immediate and the deferred! To Thee belongs praise for Thy good trial and the lavishness of Thy favours, a praise conforming to Thy good pleasure and attracting Thy great goodness and magnanimity. O All-mighty, O All-generous! By Thy mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful!" - Whispered prayer of the Thankful', Sahifa e Sajjadiya
