After reading the Will of Prophet Muhammed (sawas) most Shias ask themselves:
Why do so many narrations only talk about the 12 Imams (as) and do not mention the 12 Mahdis (as)?

The answer is even though the concept of 12 Mahdis (as) after the 12 Imams (as) is not well-known among the mainstream Shias, it has always been part of the Shia Aqida and is widely recognized by the renowned scholars.

And the reason why the leadership-claim of the 12 Mahdis never really reached the mainstream is that while it was always present in the books it has been safeguarded by Allah. And only with the appearance of the First of The Mahdis this secret was revealed.

Let us look some of the numerous ahadith and quotes which prove that there will be Mahdis from the Family of Muhammed (sawas), who will rule in the State of Divine Justice…

Narrations about the 12 Mahdis/ Qaims

12 Mahdis BBS.jpg

12 Mahdis after the Qaim (Imam Mahdi as):

After the Qaim will be 12 Mahdis, and not 12 Imams:

11 Mahdis after the Qaim (First Mahdi as):

7 Mahdis after the Mahdi:

There are Sunnia ahadiths which prove that there is more than one Mahdi - and they even prove that they are 12 Mahdis in total and are therefore in agreement with Shia ahadith about the 12 Mahdi`s (pbuta)

Qaims after Imam Mahdi/ Qaim (as):

Mahdi, Mansur, then the Imams who are Mahdis:

Imams from Imam Mahdi's (as) sons:

Imam Mahdi and his offspring are Inheriting Imams:

The 13th successor after the Prophet

The following ahadith mention 12 Imams from the children of Fatima, Ali and Muhammad (pbut). Since Ali (as) can not be a part of these specific twelve, there must be a thirteenth Imam. And according to Prophet Muhammad's (pbuhap) Will, this is the First Mahdi (as) who is the thirteenth successor from the twenty four successors (pbut).

The Shia mainstream was only aware of 12 successors after the Prophert (sawas)… and did not pay attention to the Mahdis who are also Imams (even though lower in rank)

12 sons of the Prophet (pbuh):

12 Imams from sons of Ali and Fatima:

12 Imams from lineage (sulb/loins) of Ali and Fatima:

12 Princes (Nuqba) from sons of Prophet Muhammad:

12 Successors and Imams from the sons of Fatima (3 are Ali, not 4):

12 Imams from descendants of Muhammad and Ali:

12 Imams from the Prophet and Ali:

12 Awsiya on Sunnah of Jesus Awsiya, Ali on Sunnah of Jesus:

The Mahdis are 'Imams' in reference to a rank that they earn and achieve.
And an example of reaching a rank of Imamat can be seen in this verse where Abraham (pbuh) as a Prophet reached this rank:
{And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham was tried by his Lord with commands and he fulfilled them. [Allah] said, "Indeed, I will make you an imam for the people.} (Quran 2:124)
As we know from Imam Ahmed Al-Hassan (pbuh) many of the Mahdi`s after the first Mahdi, are Prophets (pbut) and so therefore like Prophet Abraham (pbuh), they would achieve a rank of Imamat.

12 Imams: Al-Hassan, Al-Husayn and the Imams from Al-Husayn's descendants:

The Expected Qaim and the Unknown Imam:

  • It is narrated from Ali bin Ahmad from Ubaidullah bin Musa from Abdullah bin Hammad from Ibrahim bin Abdullah bin Alaa from his father from Imam Ja'far Sadiq (as) that he said:
"Amirul Momineen (as) informed of some things that would happen after him until the appearance of the Qaim.
Imam Husain (as) asked him: "O Amirul Momineen, when does Allah clear the world from the unjust people?"
Amirul Momineen (a.s.) said: "Allah does not clear the world from the unjust until the sacred blood is shed." He mentioned the story of the Umayyads and the Abbasids in a long tradition then he said: "When the Qaim rises in Khurasan, defeats Kufa and the two nations, passes the island of Bani Kawan, and another revolter from us rises in Jeelan, who will be supported by the people of Aabir and Daylaman, then the banners of the Turks will rise in different countries to support my son (the Qaim). Then some things will happen here and there. Basra will be destroyed and the Amir of the Amirs will rule in Egypt."
He told a long story and then said: "When armies get ready, different leaders rise, revolters rebel and unbelievers perish then the expected Qaim and the unknown Imam will appear with honor and virtue.
O Husain, he is your descendant, who has no like at all. He will appear between the two corners (of the Kaaba) in ragged cloths. He will rule over all the peoples and will clear the world of every evil. Blessed is he, who lives until his (the Qaim's) age and enjoys his rule." - Bihar Al Anwar - The Promised Mahdi, page132, hadith 104

Approx. 300 million Shias today know about Imam Al-Mahdi (as) and millions of Sunnis too, Muhammad son of Al-Hassan (as) he is known but for the unknown Imam, who could he be?

The Begotten from the back of the Eleventh of Imam Ali's sons:

Who is the 11th from Imam Ali's (as) sons?

  1. son: Imam Hasan
  2. son: Imam Hussain
  3. son: Imam Ali ibn Hussein
  4. son: Imam Muhammad ibn Ali
  5. son: Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad
  6. son: Imam Musa ibn Jafar
  7. son: Imam Ali ibn Musa
  8. son: Imam Muhammad ibn Ali
  9. son: Imam Ali ibn Muhammad
  10. son: Imam Hasan ibn Ali
  11. son: Imam Muhammad ibn Hassan
  12. son: Ahmed (pbut).

The 11th son is Imam Mahdi (pbuh). So who will be the decendant of Imam Mahdi (pbuh)? Ahmed Al-Hassan (as). You may read about Ahmed Al-Hassan's 6-year long silent absence here.

Imam Mahdi's Successor

Find further proof that Imam Mahdi (as) indeed has a Sucessor, who is his helper already before he suceeds him in the rule.

Imam Mahdis (as) Khalif/ Successor:

Imam Mahdis (as) Vizier/Minister:

Allegiance to Ahmed (as) after allegiance to Al-Mahdi (as):
(according to answer of Imam Ahmed, see pic right hand)

  • Huzaifa said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (sawas) - and he mentioned the Mahdi, so he said: "Verily he will be given allegiance between the Rukn and Maqam, his name is Ahmed, and Abdullah, and Al-Mahdi, these are his three names." – Ghaiba Al-Tusi p.305

The Master before Imam Mahdis Emergence (version 1):

The Master before Imam Mahdi's Emergence (version 2):

Only the Master knows Imam Mahdi's Matter:

The Mawla (Master) that is with the Qaim:

  • From Al-Baqir (pbuh) when he was talking about the Mahdi's move: "The Mahdi hurries/ races to call people to the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of his Prophet (pbuhahf), the Guardianship (Wilaya) of Ali bin Abi Talib (pbuh) and being free from his enemies. Until when the Mahdi gets to Al-Thalabya, a Man from the same lineage of the Mahdi's father will go to the Mahdi. The Man is one of the most severest in body and bravest in heart among people, apart from the Companion of the Matter (Mahdi). The Man says to the Mahdi: "O you, what are you doing? By Allah, you are frightening people like the frightening of cattle. Is this by a covenant from the Messenger of Allah (pbuhahf) or by what? "So the Master (Mawla), that will Succeed the Pledging of Allegiance, will say to the Man: "I swear by Allah either you remain silent, or I strike what is in your eyes. "So the Mahdi (pbuh) says to the Master: "Keep quiet O So-and-So." [Then says to the Man] "Yes, by Allah I have with me a Covenant from the Messenger of Allah (pbuh). O So-and-So (Master), bring me the chest." So the Master fetches it and the Man reads the covenant from the Messenger of Allah (pbuhahf). The Man then says to the Mahdi: "May Allah make me your ransom. Give me your head so I can kiss it." He kisses between his eyes then says: "May Allah make me your ransom. Renew our Pledge of Allegiance." The Mahdi (pbuh) renews the Pledge of Allegiance for them." Imam Baqir (pbuh) then says: "It is as if I am looking at them rising from the Najaf of Kufa, 300 and a few 10s of men."Tafsir alAyashi vol.2 p.59; Mu'jam Ahadith al-Imam alMahdi, vol.5 p.27-28, Hadith.1453; Bisharat al-Islam Door.3, Hadith.622; Bihar alAnwar v.52 p.343

The Yamani is the successor of Al-Mahdi:

Several Mahdis (Qaims) paving the way for the Holy Rise (Holy Qiyam) at the same time

Firstly, let’s acknowledge that all of the Imams (as) and the Mahdis (as) are called “Qa’im (the Riser)”, as it has been narrated by Ahlul Bayt (as)

For example:
Abu Khadijah narrated that Abi Abdillah (as) was asked about the Qa’im (as), so he said:
“We are all Qa’im (riser) by the command of Allah, one after the other, until the companion of the sword comes forth. So if the companion of the sword comes, he will come with a matter which is different than what was." - Al-Kafi by Sheikh alKoleini, volume 1, page 536

And al-Hakam ibn Abi Na’eem said that Aba Ja’far (as) said:
“O Hakam, we are all Qa’im (Riser) by the command of Allah”.
So I said: So are you the Mahdi (the guided)?
So he (as) said: “We all guide towards Allah”.
So I said: “So you are the companion of the sword?”
So he (as) said: “We are all companion of the sword and inheritor of the sword” - Al-Kafi by Sheikh alKoleini, volume 1, page 536

And in the following narration, you will find that the title "the Qa’ims (the Risers)” is given to the Successors of the Qa’im (as), whom are the Mahdis (as)

Abu Ja’far and Abu Abdillah (as) said about Kufa: “…in it is the mosque of Suhayl, which Allah has not sent a Prophet except that he has prayed in it. And from it will appear the justice of Allah, and in it will be His Qa’im and the Qa’ims after him, and it is the ranks of the Prophets and Vicegerents and Righteous ones”. - Wasa’il al-Shia alIslamiyya 3/524

Secondly: Now contemplate over the following narration in which the Commander of the Believers Imam Ali (as) mentions the presence of more the one Qa’im at the same time paving the way for the Holy Rise, meaning more than one Hujjah from the Family of Muhammad (sawas).

The Commander of the Believers (as) said in a long Hadith: "If the Qa'im rises in Khorasan, and dominates over the land of Kufan and Al-Millatan, and passes the island of Bani Kawan, and a Qa'im from us rises in Jaylan, and the Ibber and Deylaman will answer him. Then the awaited Qa'im and the unknown Imam will rise, he has the honor and the preference, and he is from your offspring O Hussein, no son is like him." - Ghaybat alNoamani page 283, Bisharat alIslam p41

As for who are those three Qa’ims (as) who are mentioned in the above narration (the Qa’im in Korasan, the Qa’im in Jaylan, and the awaited Qa’im and the unknown Imam), that is to be announced by Imam Ahmed alHassan (as) when he (as) wills.

But the point here is that, as it is clear from the narration, there are more than one "Qa’im" at the same time, paving the way for the Holy Qiyam (the Holy Rise).

And we, the companions of the blessed Black Banners of the East, are the only ones who acknowledge that there are several Mahdis (as) (Qa’ims) now with the Qa’im sawas working between his hands and paving the way for his victory, such as the second Mahdi Abdullah Hashem Aba alSadiq (as), and the third Mahdi Moses (as), and the Mahdi Adam (as), and the Mahdi Aaron Aba Mika’eel (as) (and more)...

Quote from the book Al-Balagh Al-Mubeen, page 3 by Nathim Al-Uqeili, a sheikh from the Illegitimate Office

Glory be to Allah the High the Great! Look at the following picture, it is a quote from the book alBalagh alMubeen by the cursed Nathim alUqeili, page 3. Nathim alUqeili the cursed mentions the above narration of the three Qa’ims, and after it he mentions the narration of the 12 men (as), that was after he said: “There are many narrations from the Messenger sawas and his Ahlul Bayt (as) about the coming of people who pave the way for Imam Al-Mahdi (as) and prepare for his authority and prepare for his victory."

And today they deny what they have written with their own impure hands, while they know with all certainty that the truth is with us the Companions of the Black Banners of the East and not with other than us, but {indeed a group of them hides the truth while they know!} - Holy Qur'an 2:146

And those who have oppressed the Family of Muhammad sawas shall know what evil abode they shall reside in. Allahumma salli ala Muhammad wa Alee Muhammad, alAemma wal Mahdiyeen, wa sallem tasleema.
